RIVERFRONT READING: ROSE MARIE KINDER & MATTHEW ECK

Matthew Eck’s award-winning novel The Farther Shore, published by Milkweed press in 2007, was inspired by his military experiences in Somalia in the 1990s.  After earning an MFA at the University of Montana , Eck is now on the creative writing faculty at The University of Central Missouri.  In 2009, he facilitated a veteran's writing workshop sponsored by the NEA and The Writers Place at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.

Writer, editor, and teacher Rose Marie Kinder is the author of the novel  An Absolute Gentleman, a psychological study of a serial killer, and two story collections: A Near Perfect Gift and Sweet Angel Band.  She taught creative writing for many years at The University of Central Missouri, where, as editor of the then annual, in-house, student publication Pleiades (now Pleiades: a Journal of New Writing), she oversaw  its transition to a semiannual, national journal.

Our "Words to Weigh" Davis Grove Haiku and Nature Poetry Contest is now underway.  Poets, don't miss this chance to have your work appear on a permanent monument along the Riverfront Heritage Trail.  Deadline for submissions is SEPTEMBER 15.  Visit this page to learn more.

Save the date:  Our next open house, Get Connected with Literary Magazines, is Thursday, September 30. This free event features a panel discussion with the editors of The Missouri Review, New Letters, and Pleiades, moderated by the Johnson County Library's John Mark Eberhart.  Come for the program and stay for drinks, food, and networking with fellow writers.
