The Goals of the Writers Place Outreach Are

  • To reach out into the community by sending writers and teachers of all genres to as wide a segment of the community as possible encompassing all diversities and ethnicities, including schools elementary thru senior; students at risk, underserved, or with special needs; senior citizens; veterans; hospitals, and other community segments as they are identified.
  • To provide a reasonably priced, intimate, inspiring, and useable location for workshops, readings, retreats, collaborations, space and writing time, special programs, book clubs, events, seminars, in-services, classes, and social gatherings.
  • To provide writers professional and non-professional opportunities to exercise and share their expertise and talent through teaching, mentoring, readings, editing, collaboration, presentations, workshops, panels, and special events

Division of Writers Place Outreach Programs

  • Writers in the Schools can include any literary enrichment experience for students and teachers, from elementary school through college Opportunities may include before-and-after-school programs, special needs enrichment, teacher training, classroom workshops, readings, National Poetry Slams, Q & A sessions, or any collaboration of teachers and writers. Possible locations include public and special needs schools, colleges and universities (Examples: Paseo Academy, Kansas City Academy, University Academy, Raytown, Park, Avila, Guadalupe Center, etc.) .
  • Writers Place Community Events can serve the community by providing space and email mailing list publicity for a wide range of groups and events. Groups could include seniors; students; book clubs; faith-based groups; caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases; cancer survivors; people suffering/recovering from alcoholism, addictions, diseases, etc. Events could include children’s lit workshops; readings targeting diverse interests/audiences such as wait people, environmentalists/nature lovers; genre readings such as mystery, romance, science fiction, essays, travel, poetry, memoir, journaling, letters, non-fiction, young adults; and special events such as MET performances, Arts Alive, Poets at Large, and the Crystal Field Scholarship Reading.
