You are writing it, but is it a prose poem or a piece of flash fiction? When do you want a line-by-line structure and when are you better off with poetic sentences and paragraphs? In this workshop, we will look at examples of both (my own and other authors). We will look at imagery, metaphor, repetition, sound, rhyme (yes, there could be rhyme in a prose poem), surrealism, and prose poem as fable. On the other hand, we will look at narrative, plot, sub-text, dialogue, conflict, and character. We will find that we can mix and match all these in new and interesting ways to create hybrid work that just might defy the box makers. You will get a new understanding of the prose poem/flash fiction and a toolkit to draw upon for your writing. You will put your new insights into action as you receive writing prompts from which to write your own flash fiction/prose poems in class.
