This month, inmates and former inmates at Lansing Prison, with Arts in Prison program instructor Arlin Buyert, will present their poetry. Arts in Prison is about inspiring and motivating positive change among those who are incarcerated. This unique program provides arts education and experiences for inmates in Kansas state prisons and detention centers. They are given a chance for self-reflection and an opportunity to create something beautiful. Such a positive experience allows an incarcerated person to begin to have hope. It's hope that allows them to believe that they can be released from prison and lead positive and productive lives. The recidivism rate among former East Hill Singers, the longest running program, is 18% as compared to 32% for the state of Kansas and greater than 50% for the United States. Arts in Prison works. Open to the Sky, an anthology of poetry by AiP participants, will be available for purchase before and after the reading. Refreshments will be served.
